Welcome to Preserving Our Humanity
Welcome!
If you’re looking for careful analysis of what today’s digital technologies mean for you and your family, and what the risks are, and what it might look like to protect human flourishing in a digital age, the Preserving Our Humanity Substack is for you.
My name is Clare Morell and I am the Director of the Technology and Human Flourishing Project at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Next year, Penguin Random House/Forum Books will publish my book, The Tech Exit: A Manifesto for Freeing Our Kids that makes a maximalist argument against giving children access to smartphones, social media, tablets and other internet-connected devices before adulthood and offers a positive vision of the good life for parents, children, schools, communities, and American society that is possible when families leave these technologies behind.
On this Substack, I will be sharing regular original content related to these themes, as well as articles I publish elsewhere, addressing smartphones and social media, video games, tablets, and online pornography. In every instance, my goal is to be clear minded about what digital technology means for our humanity and human flourishing, and what we can do to protect our humanity and to raise free and virtuous people. My goal is to hone in on solutions and a positive vision for parents, schools, and policymakers. I’m convinced that both individually and together, we have the power to preserve our humanity. I hope you’ll join me pursuing a more humane way of life for yourself, your family, and your children.
Just yesterday I had a new piece out in Newsweek on five practical steps parents can take to help kids prepare for upcoming school phone bans to be part of the solution to protect the school day from phones.
